When you write a scientific article, you have to refer most of the content of your introduction and discussion to other articles published in the field. The database you use to search for other publications is probably PubMed, since it is widely used in the scientific community and contains hundred of millions of references. So if you want to keep up to date with the new discoveries in your research field or from scientists that you really admire, you can either manually search for some keywords or names that can define what you are looking for, or you can ask PubMed to send you an email every time something that might interest you comes out.
For example, if you want to check all the articles that could be related to hypertension and that have been published, you can type the word “hypertension” directly on the PubMed search bar and hit “Search”. You’ll get a list of approximately 300,000 articles that contain this word in their content. Now if you want to know every time there is a new publication on hypertension, simply hit the button “Save Search”, as you can see on this screenshot. The website will then open the “My NCBI page” where you will have to create a personal account. This will permit to save your information, so that you can of course save your searches, but also access your information from any computer that you might use. It is really easy, just follow the simple indications.
Once you are registered on PubMed, just log in with your information and start doing searches. You just need to type whatever you want and hit “Save Search”. You will have to choose a name for your search (for example “hypertension”) and on the next page, you will have to choose how often you want to receive emails with the new publications (once a month, once a week or everyday). You can also choose more options like the report format and the number of items you want to receive. I usually leave these settings to default. Finally click “Save” and you’re done!
You can repeat this process with as many keywords or phrases as you want, to make sure that you don’t miss anything and be always on top of your research!
